Once the consent procedure is complete, we schedule your appointment for the IUD insertion, performed by one of our experienced medical practitioners.

The idea of having an IUD insertion procedure might make you feel a little nervous, and that is okay! Taking steps to help you feel relaxed, such as getting a good night’s sleep before your appointment, eating a healthy meal before your procedure, or bringing a trusted friend or partner with you to the clinic can make you feel more comfortable and help your insertion go as smoothly as possible.
IUD insertion is a short and simple in-office procedure. You won’t require anesthesia, but we might recommend that you take over-the-counter pain medicine, such as ibuprofen, in advance to alleviate discomfort.

Having an IUD inserted is an individual experience with some patients reporting little or no pain, and others reporting moderate or even severe discomfort. Usually the IUD insertion procedure takes only a minute or two and usually causes only mild discomfort that goes away shortly.

There are some things that you and your doctor can do before the insertion significantly minimize or almost completely eliminate any associated pain.

Please discuss these with your doctor:

• Use a misoprostol pill the night before
• Take up to ibuprofen a few hours before
• Ask your doctor to use a topical anesthetic on your cervix
• Ask your doctor about a lidocaine injection in your cervix

All of these and more options are available to you…just discuss them with your doctor. After all, Getting and IUD doesn’t really have to hurt!

Did you know that you can plan to return to work and other activities right after your IUD placement appointment? However, there is a possibility that you will experience the following symptoms:

• Slight dizziness or faintness
• Cramping, similar to menstrual cramps
• Light spotting

The certified practitioner will discuss this at your insertion appointment, but typically, they will want to see you four to six weeks after insertion to ensure that your IUD is in its proper place.
Before your Post-IUD Insertion appointment, if you experience any of the situations listed below, please contact your medical practitioner right away.

• You think that you are pregnant.
• You cannot find your IUD string.
• The IUD string is longer or shorter than usual.
• You have been exposed to a sexually transmitted disease (STD)

Your IUD can be removed for the following reasons:

• You have chosen to become pregnant.
• You want to use another type of contraception
• Your device has expired, and you need a replacement.

Ultimately, you can choose to remove your IUD at any time, for any reason, and we will be more than happy to help you with the process.

The IUD removal procedure is similar to the insertion procedure, but faster since it typically just takes a minute or two.
Most IUDs can successfully be removed via the string alone. However, if your IUD does not come out easily, your practitioner may use ultrasound imaging to guide them during the procedure.
